The U.S. Census Bureau collects data and publishes estimates on housing characteristics that provide insight into the nation’s housing. This report focuses on several measures that capture changes in housing availability and affordability, including measures of housing inventory, housing unit structure types, vacancy rates, homeownership rates, home values, monthly housing costs, and housing cost burden. For some of these measures, additional analysis is provided by breaking the measure down by certain demographic characteristics or whether the house is owner-occupied or renter-occupied.
This report primarily uses 2022 and 2023 data from the American Community Survey (ACS) to describe estimates and yearly changes at the national level. Certain sections of this report also use ACS data from 2005 (when the ACS was first implemented) to 2021.
