In the broad landscape of disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, U.S. Census Bureau data can be immensely valuable.
The Census Bureau produces timely local data that are critical to emergency planning, preparedness, and recovery efforts for all types of emergencies.
As the nation battles the spread of COVID-19, Census Bureau data are also being used to help in the fight.
For example, American Community Survey statistics are helping identify counties with large at-risk populations such as the elderly.
The Census Bureau’s ongoing surveys of businesses will also assist in measuring the economic impact of COVID-19 and other emergencies and help in the country’s eventual recovery.
This invaluable information is only possible because people and businesses respond to our confidential surveys such as the American Community Survey, the Economic Census, and the 2020 Census.
In July 2019, Chip Walker, co-chair of the Census Bureau's Emergency Preparedness and Response Team, sat down with Community Risk Reduction Radio to talk about how Census Bureau data help when any disaster strikes.
