  • Gulf War I – August 1990 to August 2001
  • Vietnam Era – August 1964 to April 1975
  • Korean War – July 1950 to January 1955
  • World War II – December 1941 to December 1946
  • Peacetime only – November 1941 or earlier; January 1947 to June 1950; February 1955 to July 1964; May 1975 to July 1990
  • Period of service: Veterans are categorized in their most recent period of wartime service. For example, a veteran who served in both Gulf War I and Gulf War II would be categorized as “Gulf War II” for this analysis.
  • Veteran-owned business: U.S. military service veterans own 51 percent or more of the equity, interest, or stock of the business.
  • Service-connected disability: A disability, disease, or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service. The degree of disability (rating) is graduated from 0 to 100 percent in increments of 10 percent.
  • Unemployment rate: the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the civilian labor force.
  • Uses VA health care: those who have ever used or enrolled in Department of Veterans Affairs health care.
