The title of this paper session is "Current Research Problems Encountered in Statistical Agencies," and in preparing my contribution I interpreted this title quite literally. Thus, I intend to provide a cursory review of a number of the areas undergoing current development at the Census Bureau, rather than an in-depth review of one, or at most a few areas. I trust that interested readers will contact members of my staff directly for details about the precise nature of the work. For organizational purposes, I have grouped the areas into five broad sections:
In what follows, I give a brief description of each of 15 specific research areas within these broad categories. I will give some discussion of the importance of the research area and where they fit in the Census Bureau's program of surveys, censuses, and other statistical products. I also provide some indication of the status of the work and of the methodological or technological approaches being employed.
