GENSTAN stands for GENeralized data STANdardizer. GENSTAN is one of a series of Bureau of the Census, Statistical Research Division, COBOL program code generators written in UNIMAC. UNIMAC is a high-level-language macro processor language which itself is implemented in COBOL-74. GENSTAN can be used to generate programs which perform many kinds of transformations on sequential, non-hierarchical data files.
