Origins

Athough it was contemplated several years earlier, conflation, or automated map compilation, first became a reality in 1985 through a fortuitous combination of circumstances. First, there was a clear need for some computerized system for doing a large amount of compilation of digital map data. That need arose within a joint project between the United States Geological Survey and the Bureau of the Census to consolidate their separate digital map files of metropolitan areas of the United States.
