Although living arrangements play an integral role in the well being of older persons, residence patterns are one of the least studied aspects of population aging. This paper seeks to draw together existing statistics on living arrangement of the elderly in different societies, to consider some of the basic demographic characteristics associated with residential patterns, and to explore changes in living arrangements over time. Data on housing and amenities also are examined, as are various national policies with regard to living arrangements of older citizens.
