Scientists and Engineers in Taiwan: 1990

Written by:

Executive Summary

This report summarizes occupational and educational statistics on scientists and engineers in Taiwan, based on data from the 1990 census. Scientists and engineers are a small share of Taiwan’s working-age population, compared with other countries in this series. In 1990, Taiwan had approximately seven scientists and engineers per 1,000 members of its economically active population. Scientists and engineers’ education levels far exceed those of the overall employed labor force, and have helped Taiwan make the transition from a technological imitator to innovator.
