Introduction
First Look at Grandparents Living with Grandchildren:
New data from the Census 2000 Supplementary Survey shows that 5.6 million grandparents were living in a household with one or more of their grandchildren.
This accounts for almost 4 percent of the population age 30 and over in 2000.
A subset of those grandparents, 42 percent (2.4 million), were responsible for most of the basic needs of their grandchildren.
The majority of these grandparents have been providing for their grandchildren a year or more.
