Executive Summary

At the request of the U.S. Census Bureau’s Associate Directorate for Demographic Programs, staff in the Center for Survey Measurement conducted cognitive and usability testing of sections of the 2016 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation (FHWAR). The FHWAR has been conducted about every five years since 1955 in partnership with state fish and wildlife agencies and national conservation organizations. The survey collects data on the number of anglers, hunters and wildlife-watching participants, trips and days spent on different types of activities, expenditures, number of participants and days of participation by animal sought, and demographic characteristics of participants. National and state level results are used to make policy decisions related to fish and wildlife restoration and management. This report presents the findings from thirty cognitive and usability interviews that were conducted in two rounds between November 2014 and February 2015.
