Using an Autocoder to Code Industry & Occupation in the American Community Survey

Written by:

Abstract

Every year the American Community Survey (ACS) collects industry and occupation data on nearly 2.5 million individuals. The text write-in information must then be coded, or converted to an industry or occupation numeric category code. This presentation provides a detailed description of the industry and occupation coding process as of 2012, when an autocoder was implemented to decrease the industry and occupation clerical coding workload.
