Who Had Pandemic Babies? Exploring the Profiles of Mothers with a Recent Birth Using ACS Data

Working Paper Number: SEHSD WP2023-12

Introduction

Recent studies using vital statistics data have provided important data points regarding the loss and rebound of expected births after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, less is currently known about the characteristics of women who had a child during this unprecedented time, or the households in which they lived. Using data from the American Community Survey, we explore the characteristics of women who had a recent birth using 2021 1-year data. We also compare them to the profile of women who had a recent birth in the 2019 1-year data to illuminate how these characteristics changed, if at all, after the onset of the pandemic. The significance of age and socioeconomic status for having a recent birth between the two time periods is assessed via logistic regression.
