The Demographics of Disability in the Family: Prevalence, Characteristics, and Implications for Financial Well-Being

Written by:
Working Paper Number SEHSD WP-2023-22

Introduction

The study draws on 1-year 2019 ACS estimates to describe the number, percent, and characteristics of U.S. families affected by disability in 2019. This includes a discussion about which members of the household are most likely to have a disability, the prevalence of child disability, working-age adult disability, and older-age adult disability within the family. In the second part of the study, families in the U.S. that include someone with a disability are compared to those that do not on several economic characteristics, including the number of workers in the family, family income, and family poverty status. While we use ACS data for these initial comparisons, we draw on SIPP data to test whether a change in family disability status between 2018 and 2019 is associated with a change in family income between 2018 and 2019. Since disability status is reported at the time of interview and income data is reported for the prior calendar year, we draw on three years of SIPP data, spanning 2018-2020.
