MAY 3, 2021 — The U.S. Census Bureau released final 2020 annual estimates of housing units authorized by building permits. Data include estimates by nation, census region, census division, state, metropolitan area, county and permit-issuing place.

The Annual Building Permits Survey provides national, state and local statistics on new privately owned residential construction. All places issuing building permits for privately owned residential structures are covered in the survey. More than 99% of all privately owned residential buildings constructed are in permit-issuing places.

Data will soon be available using a new data time series and visualization tool. Users will be able to compare data from the available geographies and timeframes, as well as download their own customized time series. The data visualization tool will be available in the coming months at <www.census.gov/construction/bps/>.
