PUMS Data

The American Community Survey (ACS) Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files are a set of untabulated records about individual people or housing units. Supporting documentation for the data below is available on the PUMS Documentation page. To learn more, visit our PUMS Handbook.

PUMS files are available on the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site in both CSV and SAS formats. Both formats contain two record types including housing files (e.g. "csv_hak" or "sas_hak") or person files (e.g. "csv_pak" or "sas_pak").  Microdata access from 2005-current is available on data.census.gov.

  • ftp.svg
When the 2018-2022 ACS 5-year PUMS files were originally released, they contained a mix of 2010-based and 2020-based PUMAs. These files contain updated PUMA codes for the 2018-2022 ACS 5-Year PUMS files. The 2010 PUMA codes have been cross-walked to 2020 PUMA values with updated weights. Visit the 2022 Geography Changes page below for more information about the change to the PUMA boundaries.
