In the American Community Survey, the Hmong population is classified within the East Asian regional grouping, guided by the “original peoples” language in the standards set by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget in 1997. However, after extensive engagement with leaders from the Hmong community, the Census Bureau recognizes that many within the Hmong population in the United States identify as part of the Southeast Asian population.
