Economic Census NAPCS Codes and Descriptions (Item 22)

The North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) was first introduced and used in the 2017 Economic Census.  It is a comprehensive, market- or demand-based, hierarchical classification system for products (goods and services).  It is (a) not industry-of-origin based but can be linked to the NAICS industry structure, (b) consistent across the three North American countries, and (c) promotes improvements in the identification and classification of service products across international classification systems, such as the Central Product Classification System of the United Nations.  Additional information on NAPCS is available at: https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/economic-census/guidance/understanding-napcs.html

The table below shows descriptions for NAPCS Codes for the 2022 Economic Census. Codes appear in the left column and their corresponding descriptions in the right column.

The Codes/Descriptions can be used for adding products in the Item 22 response in the spreadsheet template downloaded from the online reporting instrument.
