In each geodatabase is a metadata table with a short name and a full description of each data element. The short names in the metadata file correspond to the data element field headings in the detailed tables of each geodatabase. These metadata tables can be difficult to read in a GIS. All short names and associated full names can be found in the text file below:

Data are available for the United States and Puerto Rico. Not all tables are available for Puerto Rico.

Each geodatabase contains a metadata file with a short name and a full description of each data element. The short names in the metadata file correspond to the data element field headings in the detailed tables of each geodatabase. Full descriptions in the metadata table are incomplete if they surpass the 255-character limit for geodatabase tables. You can access text versions of these metadata files, which contain short names and full descriptions for all data elements, including those over 255-characters below:

General Metadata [TXT] - This file applies to the following geographies: American Indian Areas, Census Tracts, Congressional Districts, Core Based Statistical Areas, County Subdivisions, Public Use Microdata Areas, School Districts, State Legislative Districts, Urban Areas and ZIP Code Tabulation Areas.

Block Group Metadata [TXT]
