The Recipiency History Topical Module asks respondents if they have ever (as an adult or on behalf of a child) received assistance from Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)/Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), the Food Stamp Program, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). If the respondent has received assistance in the past, they are asked the first and last year they received assistance. The intended reference period for these questions is the time prior to the current Wave (which was Wave 1 for the 2004 panel). A small number of respondents reported first receiving assistance within the Wave 1 reference period, but did not report receipt of assistance in Core. This seems to be a respondent inconsistency and data users should be aware of this discrepancy.
Data users should reference the Core files for current receipt of AFDC/TANF, food stamps, and SSI and reference this topical module for previous receipt of AFDC/TANF, food stamps, and SSI.
