For 2021 SIPP, the Residence editing process was updated to include more extensive reconciliation between residence characteristics variables as well as month of birth. The update applied to persons who had lived at their residence since birth.
The reconciled variables include:
- Reason for moving (EEHC_WHY)
- Year moved into residence (non-public version of TEHC_MVYR)
- Month moved into residence (EEHC_MVMO)
- Tenure status of prior residence (EEHC_PVTEN)
- Year of birth (internal version of TDOB_BYEAR)
- Month of birth (EDOB_BMONTH)
The reconciliation ensures that respondents initially coded as having lived at their residence since birth (based on internal versions of TEHC_MVYR and TDOB_BYEAR, EEHC_MVYR, and EDOB_BMONTH) are coded accordingly on reason for move (EEHC_WHY=15, always lived here [never moved]), and corresponding residence characteristics are coded as not-in-universe (TEHC_MVYR, EEHC_MVMO, and EEHC_PVTEN).
As a result of the reconciliation, more respondents are coded as EEHC_WHY=15, and not-in-universe on TEHC_MVYR, EEHC_MVMO, and EEHC_PVTEN. Data users should be aware of this update when comparing estimates for the affected variables (and in-universe rates for TEHC_MVYR, EEHC_MVMO, and EEHC_PVTEN) from the 2021 SIPP and later against prior years.
