Surveys and Programs Contributing to Children

Data on children can be found from a variety of sources. These sources are listed below with brief descriptions to help you decide which data source would best suit your needs. Availability of data by time and geography are highlighted in the sections below.

American Community Survey (ACS)

Data from 2000 to the present for children are the U.S., states, metropolitan areas, & specific geographic areas. Includes about 990 recurring tables.
Current Population Survey (CPS)

Data about children are available for the U.S. from 1960 to the present. Data about children are collected annually.
Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP)

Data from 1991 to the present for the U.S. Supplemental modules are included on a rotating basis and include topics such as child well-being and child care.
Decennial Census of Population and Housing

Data from 1790 to the present about children for the U.S., states, counties, and subcounty statistical areas (such as zip codes and block groups).
