Can I get information on local labor markets from the Census Bureau?

The Census Bureau's Local Employment Dynamics (LED) partnership produces cost effective, public-use information for local areas by combining federal, state and Census Bureau data on employers and employees. The Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) dataset provides indicators such as employment, hires, job creation/destruction, turnover, and earnings for a wide variety of geographies and firm and worker characteristics. The LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES) dataset provides block-level employment counts showing where people work and where workers live, as well as detailed firm and worker characteristics breakouts. LED data is available via these online tools:

  • QWI Explorer
  • J2J Explorer
  • PSEO Explorer
  • VEO Explorer
  • OnTheMap
  • OnTheMap for Emergency Management
  • LED Extraction Tool

The Decennial Census and American Community Survey (ACS) also collect data directly from respondents on employment, occupation, and earnings. Users also should check with the Bureau of Labor Statistics for extensive data on these topics.
