Starting in 2011, the AHS included a module on home improvement, collecting data from owner-occupied households about remodeling and replacement projects in the past two years. This data are available in the Home Improvement Characteristics table and the Home Improvement Costs table, both of which are included in the AHS Summary Tables package. These tables are also in the AHS Table Creator (2011 and later), along with a column variable called “Professional/Do-It-Yourself” (2011 and later), which reports who did the work. For 2015 and later, there are also column variables for ‘Main Source of Funding’ and ‘Primary Year of Work’ that provide information on how the home improvement jobs were paid for and when the home improvements took place.
From 1997-2009 the AHS published report supplements on home improvements, alterations, additions, and repairs for occupied housing units by amount spent and type of job. Access these reports for each of these respective survey years.
In addition, the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University has a number of reports on remodeling, some of which are based on AHS data.
