Does the American Housing Survey (AHS) collect data on senior housing?

Senior housing data are available from the AHS Summary Tables package. Age of Householder data are shown in a stub of the Household Demographics table, and as one of the column variables in the AHS Table Creator (2011 and later). In addition, the “Household Characteristics” section of the Household Demographics table has a stub called “Persons 65 Years Old and Over.” In the Public Use File, these are the HHAGE and NUMELDERS variables. In addition, the survey also asks whether housing units are in age-restricted or naturally occurring retirement communities, which can be found in the Neighborhoods table. These variables are not available from the PUF for disclosure reasons.

Some survey years (e.g. 2011 and 2019) include a topical module on accessibility features in the housing unit (see the Home Accessibility table in Table Creator). To find these data on the PUF, search the AHS Codebook by selecting the “Accessibility” topic from the Topic/Subtopic drop-down menu.
