Is there a way to create special tabulations from the American Housing Survey (AHS) when the summary tables do not cross the rows and columns I need?

The AHS Table Creator data tool gives users the ability to create customized tables from the American Housing Survey without having to use the Public Use File (microdata). The tool allows users to select a table of predefined rows and cross tabulate it by over 20 different variables, which display as columns. Up to two column variables may be chosen for any given table. Access the AHS Table Creator.

The AHS also publishes downloadable microdata files (PUFs) that allow users to construct tables using individual survey responses. These datasets contain tens of thousands of records and almost two thousand variables. Most users access AHS data with a statistical analysis package. Neither HUD nor the Census Bureau endorses any specific commercial products for use with the AHS. Statistical packages common among our users include SAS, SPSS, R, and Stata, but that is not a complete list. The files are available in SAS and CSV formats. Access the microdata files from the Data page of the Census Bureau AHS web site.

To gain special access to the AHS Internal Use File (IUF), see Internal User File Guide. If users require additional assistance, HUD or Census analysts may be able to produce custom tabulations, particularly for Federal agencies. These requests are handled on a case-by-case basis. Tabulations will be run using the Public Use Files, not the internal files, to avoid disclosure issues. Contact the American Housing Survey Branch at 1-888-518-7365 (toll free) or email [email protected] for data questions or assistance with special tabulations.
