This report comprises the child labor statistics published in Chapter V, Volume IV, of the Fourteenth Census Reports, together with an introductory analysis of the general statistics relating to children engaged in gainful pursuits – especially nonagricultural pursuits – and of the detailed statistics relating to children engaged in certain important nonagricultural pursuits.
Volume IV presents statistics showing the number and proportion of persons engaged in gainful occupations and the distribution of gainful workers by sex, color or race, nativity, parentage, age, and marital condition.
Census statistics date back to 1790 and reflect the growth and change of the United States. Past census reports contain some terms that today’s readers may consider obsolete and inappropriate. As part of our goal to be open and transparent with the public, we are improving access to all Census Bureau original publications and statistics, which serve as a guide to the nation's history.
