Written by:
Report Number: C2020BR-11

This is the fifth in a series of briefs describing disclosure avoidance methods used to protect 2020 Census data products and the implications of those methods for data users.

This brief describes how differential privacy works and is applied to the 2020 Census Detailed Demographic and Housing Characteristics File B (Detailed DHC-B). It also explains how adaptive designs differs between Detailed DHC-B and the Detailed DHC-A.

User note: We recommend first reading the brief, "Disclosure Avoidance and the 2020 Census: How SafeTab-P Works." This brief describes how differential privacy is applied to the Detailed DHC-A and is a precursor to the brief about Detailed DHC-B and SafeTab-H.
