Introduction

The Census X-11 seasonal adjustment method is a widely used procedure that has been difficult to understand from a theoretical point of view. In an attempt to understand how X-11 might fit into the statistical framework of signal extraction, Cleveland and Tiao (1976) found an ARIMA model for the observed unadjusted series for which the standard options of X-11is appropriate.
