Introduction

Who lives in a sampled household is the first and most fundamental thing a survey or census must determine, if interviews with its members are to represent a population completely. Yet, little systematic attention has been given to sources of measurement error in compiling household rosters. I will examine, and challenge, the assumption made in surveys that household residents are reliably and consistently reported by household respondents.
