2016-2020 American Community Survey 5-year estimates are now available, including the Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) Files and Variance Replicate Estimate (VRE) Tables.

Reference Materials

American Community Survey (ACS) estimates are published for geographies based on population size.  The Census Bureau releases Excel files to help users understand what geographies are available in each data release.

  • Use the "Geographic areas published" files to see the count for different geographic areas
  • Use the "Detailed list of geographic areas" files to see the name and GEOID of each geography available in each release

From 2005 through 2014, maps were created to show the counties and places, American Indian Areas (AIAs), Alaska Native village statistical areas (ANVSAs), and Alaska Native Regional Corporations (ANRCs) that received published data yearly in these datasets. These maps are no longer being created, and users are advised to refer to the detailed list of geographic areas as a text alternative.  ACS 5-year data are tabulated for all counties, places, AIAs, ANVSAs and ANRCs, so no reference maps were produced. Users who would like to produce their own maps for these areas should refer to our Geography Tools page.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Census Bureau changed the 2020 American Community Survey (ACS) release. Instead of providing the standard 1-year data products, the Census Bureau released experimental estimates from the 1-year data. This includes a limited number of data tables for the nation, states, and the District of Columbia. Puerto Rico is not included.
