Relationship to Householder in the 2018-2022 ACS 5-Year Comparison Profile

Relationship data for the 2013-2017 5-year period was mistakenly suppressed within the 2018-2022 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year Comparison Profile table CP02 "Comparative Social Characteristics in the United States." As an alternative, data users may compare B09019 from the 2013-2017 ACS 5-year release with B09019 from the 2018-2022 ACS 5-year release using the ACS Statistical Testing Tool.

Data users can combine categories from B09019 from the 2018-2022 ACS 5-year release to create comparable categories to B09019 from the 2013-2017 ACS 5-year release.

  • The same-sex and opposite-sex spouse categories in 2018-2022 ACS 5-year B09019 are comparable to the spouse category in 2013-2017 ACS 5-year B09019.
  • The same-sex and opposite-sex unmarried partner categories in 2018-2022 ACS 5-year B09019 are comparable to the unmarried partner category in 2013-2017 ACS 5-year B09019.
  • For both data years, the biological, adopted, and stepchild categories can be combined to produce the child category.
  • The relatives category in both versions of B09019 consist of brother or sister, parent, parent-in-law, grandchild, son-in-law or daughter-in-law, or other relative.
  • Nonrelatives include the remaining categories: roomer or boarder (2013-2017 only), roommate or housemate, foster child, or other nonrelative.

For data users wishing to combine categories, the Understanding and Using American Community Survey: What All Data Users Need to Know document details instructions for approximating the margin of error for statistical comparison.
