Category labeling errors were discovered in the MDAT (Microdata Analysis Tool Beta) and technical documentation for some of the 2020 CPS ASEC five-year migration data. No numeric estimates were affected. Corrections were made to the technical documentation PDF, and corrections are planned for the MDAT metadata.
Migration recode variable M5G_MTR3 used the same category labels as M5G_MTR4 (the five-year counterpart to MIG_MTR4) when it should have used a five-year version of the MIG_MTR3 category labels. M5G_MTR3 includes division relationships, while M5G_MTR4 specifies different region five years ago.
Not-in-universe category labels for some five-year migration variables indicated age less than one year old as not in universe, when they should have indicated less than five years old as not in universe. Affected variables were M5G_MTR1, M5G_MTR3, M5G_MTR4, M5G_DIV, M5G_REG, and M5G_DSCP.
The correct category labels for M5G_MTR3 and M5G_MTR4, respectively, are as follows:
M5G_MTR3:
1 = Nonmover
2 = Same county
3 = Different county, same state
4 = Different state, same division
5 = Different division, same region
6 = Different region
7 = Abroad
8 = Not in universe (children under 5 yrs old)
M5G_MTR4:
1 = Nonmover
2 = Same county
3 = Different county, same state
4 = Different state in Northeast
5 = Different state in Midwest
6 = Different state in South
7 = Different state in West
8 = Abroad
9 = Not in universe (children under 5 yrs old)
A variable labeling error was discovered within the public-use microdata person-level file. Imputation flag I_M5G2 is labeled as the imputation flag for MIG_ST (one-year migration state), when it should be labeled as the imputation for M5G_ST (five-year migration state). None of the numeric estimates were affected. Data users are encouraged to note this error when accessing the 2020 public-use microdata.
