Census Bureau Provides Updates on 2020 Census Data Products

May 31, 2023:  Today, the U.S. Census Bureau announced two of the remaining 2020 Census data products are planned for release in September 2024:

  • Detailed Demographic and Housing Characteristics File B (Detailed DHC-B) – This product will provide household type (e.g., family or nonfamily) and tenure (i.e., owner or renter occupied) information for approximately 370 detailed racial and ethnic groups, such as German, Lebanese, Jamaican, Chinese, Native Hawaiian and Mexican, as well as about 1,200 detailed American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) tribes and villages such as the Navajo Nation.
  • Supplemental Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (S-DHC) – This product will provide counts of people living in certain household and family types, including the total population in households, average household size by age and tenure, average family size, household and family type for people under 18 years old, and total population in households by tenure.

Additionally, the Census Bureau announced that the S-DHC will be available for fewer geographies than originally proposed. The S-DHC tables will now be available at the national and state levels only. Previously, the Census Bureau proposed including additional geographies depending on the table: county, census tract, block group, American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian areas, and places.  Our existing disclosure avoidance system could not ensure confidentiality protections for people within substate geographies for these tables while also meeting the Census Bureau's data quality standards. These changes are reflected in the 2020 Census Data Product Crosswalk.

The crosswalk also provides the final Detailed DHC-A table shells and updated table shells for the Detailed DHC-B. The table shells reflect that the amount of data available for the detailed racial and ethnic groups and AIAN tribes and villages depends on their population size for a specific geography, with larger populations receiving more information.

The Census Bureau is still developing a schedule for the 2020 Census Privacy-Protected Microdata Files and will keep the public informed. In the May 25, 2023 newsletter, we incorrectly stated the 2020 PPMF would be released this fall.
