Schedule

The annual population and housing unit estimates are released on a flow basis throughout the year, beginning with the national and state total estimates release in December and ending with the release of population estimates for the nation, states, and counties by demographic characteristics during the following summer.

The latest full vintage available is the Vintage 2020 estimates series. These estimates are based on the 2010 Census and are created without incorporation or consideration of the 2020 Census results. They are regarded as a “research series” rather than official estimates as they are used largely for evaluative purposes. For example, the Vintage 2020 estimates may be used in comparisons with the 2020 Census to make determinations about the accuracy of the estimates. Differences between the estimates and Census counts are typically interpreted as error in the estimates and are used to inform research and methodological improvements over the decade.

The 2010 to 2020 Intercensal Estimates will become the official estimates for the decade and are currently scheduled to be produced during late 2022 (specific timeline for release forthcoming). They are produced by modifying the Vintage 2020 estimates to account for differences between these estimates and the results of the 2020 Census. The result is a consistent time series from the 2010 Census to the 2020 Census. For more information on the Intercensal Estimates, please see the 2000-2010 Methodology Statement.

The release schedule for the Vintage 2021 estimates appears below. This series is developed from a base that incorporates the 2020 Census, Vintage 2020 estimates, and 2020 Demographic Analysis estimates. For population estimates methodology statements, see https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/popest/technical-documentation/methodology.html
