Realizing Our Public Service Through Continuous Community Engagement

Written by: Robert L. Santos, Director — September 13 — When’s the last time you thought about what being a public servant really means for us at the U.S. Census Bureau? This question transcends our specific roles and contributions associated with our job titles. As I’ve often said, every person at the Census Bureau contributes critically to our mission, period. Without our single enterprise, community-of-the-whole effort, we would not be effective. We all must do our parts toward the common good.

What You Should Know About the Upcoming Detailed DHC File A

Written by: Rachel Marks, Chief, Racial Statistics Branch, Population Division; Jessica E. Peña, Senior Researcher, Race/Ethnicity Research and Outreach, Population Division; Alli Coritz, Senior Analyst, Racial Statistics Branch, Population Division — September 13 — The 2020 Census Detailed Demographic and Housing Characteristics File A (Detailed DHC-A) greatly expands what we know about the racial and ethnic composition of the U.S. population. While the 2020 Census has already revealed much about the overall Hispanic population and the major race groups (White, Black or African American, Asian and so on), the Detailed DHC-A provides data on detailed groups – such as German, Lebanese, Jamaican, Chinese, Native Hawaiian and Mexican – and on American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) tribes and villages like the Navajo Nation.

Using Administrative Data to Evaluate Nonresponse Bias - CPS ASEC

Written by: Adam Bee and Jonathan Rothbaum — September 11 — In the latest release of its annual income report, Income in the United States: 2022, the U.S. Census Bureau tabulates the national income distribution using survey responses collected February 2023 through April 2023 (with the majority of data collected in March) as part of the 2023 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement (CPS ASEC). However, as Research Matters blog posts from each of the last three years have explained (in 20202021, and 2022), nonresponse in the CPS ASEC has biased income and poverty estimates.

Results From Recent Research on Advanced Technology Use and Automation

Written by: By David N. Beede and Emin M. Dinlersoz, U.S. Census Bureau — September 11 — Using robots to automate tasks is becoming increasingly common, even outside of manufacturing — for example, in fast food restaurant kitchens and hospitals. Similarly, recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) suggest that AI is increasingly able to perform tasks (e.g., compose music, write poetry and generate images) until recently believed to be reserved for humans. In general, the diffusion of advanced technologies like robotics and AI is accompanied by questions about whether they will mainly augment workers’ skills or substitute for them.
