Poverty is an important indicator of economic well-being. Federal and state policymakers, as well as community stakeholders often use poverty rates and income-to-poverty ratios as key indicators of current economic conditions. Poverty rates, measured as the proportion of people in poverty, are often used to identify communities in need. This brief is the annual (ACSBR-026) report of poverty from the 2024 American Community Survey 1- year estimates and analyzes poverty rates at the nation, state and the largest metro areas. Year-to-year and longer trend poverty rate changes are discussed and visualized. The depth of poverty and those with income-to-poverty ratios near poverty are examined as well.
