The hypotheses and the data and conclusions presented are the results of anthropological participant-observed fieldwork undertaken in Spanish Harlem, New York. In the report I have also drawn on additional fieldwork data that I have been collecting since March of 1985 when I first moved into Spanish Harlem and began fieldwork on street culture.
