In most cases, the American Housing Survey's sample sizes are too small to provide state or county estimates. We do publish selected states, however, and metro areas based on supplemental samples.
The 2015-2023 AHS sample allows for state level estimates for seven states (California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas). Additional estimates for Maryland, Virginia, Colorado, and Ohio are available on a rotating basis within that period as well. These states combine the samples from the Integrated National Sample and the Independent Metropolitan Sample to produce their estimates. For more information about specific geography variables, use the AHS Codebook and filter on the Subtopic “Geography.”
Although the STATE variable is withheld from the PUF, data for selected states are published (with suppression) in the AHS Table Creator.
The American Community Survey has state and lower level data. Some, but not all, data items collected in the AHS are also available in the ACS. For any questions about ACS data, visit their contact page.
