Note for 2020 through 2022 estimates: Data collection for the CPS ASEC data years 2020 through 2022 largely occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-related changes to survey operations and related nonresponse may have influenced CPS ASEC estimates in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

Note: Historical Table and Figure A-6 (Distance of Intercounty Move) are no longer updated as of data year 2022.

ASEC User Note: Updates to Reasons for Moving Categories: 2020
Updates to the reason for moving categories included the addition of a new category, “relationship with unmarried partner (boy/girlfriend, fiancé, etc.).”


ASEC User Note: Migration Question Wording Change in 2004
Before 2004, the question asked about residence on March 1 of the previous year. As of 2004, it asked about residence one year ago.

The source of data for the 2014 tables is the CPS ASEC sample of 98,000 addresses.


ASEC User Note: Distance of Move Estimates from 2003 to 2005
A change in processing resulted in a shift in the distribution of movers and distance moved between the 2002-2003 to 2004-2005 periods.


ASEC User Note: Migration Questions 1971 through 1980
The 1-year geographic mobility question was not asked from 1972 to 1975 and from 1977 to 1980.
