Census of Manufactures: 1947 — Volume I: General Summary

A compilation of detailed comparative statistics for industries and geographic areas on selected subjects.

Chapters include data on the following subjects: Employment and payrolls, size of establishments, type of organization, inventories in the hands of manufacturers, expenditures for plant and equipment, highway-type motor vehicles, fuels and electric energy consumed, and selected metal-working operations maintained by manufacturing establishments. A United States summary chapter presents the basic data historically for industries. The following subjects are also included in the appendixes: Provisions of law relating to the census of manufactures; census report forms and punch cards; industry descriptions; derivation of the 1939 industry data comparable with 1947 census industry classifications; and comparison of 1947 census and Standard Industrial Classification systems.
