Imagine you’re an entrepreneur looking to establish a pet supply business.
Before setting up shop, you need to assess, among other things, the need and potential customer base – and size up the competition.
That means exploring such things as the number of establishments – grocery stores, retail outlets, convenience stores and the like – that sell pet food in your state as well as their revenue and employee count.
The Industry by Products table shows which industries are commonly associated with each product.
A good place to start your search: the latest 2022 Economic Census Product Statistics tables, which show the products created and sold by key industries in the U.S. economy (at the 6-digit 2022 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) level).
This dataset offers a unique perspective that can help business owners, investors, consumers and other users better understand the breadth of products and services available on the market.
The same product or service can be sold by different industries or even different NAICS sectors.
For example, people may purchase pet food from a retail establishment classified in one NAICS industry, such as a Pet and Pet Supplies Retailers or Supermarkets and Other Grocery retailers (except Convenience Retailers), that they could also buy from a Veterinary Services business, classified in a different sector (Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services).
Perhaps you want granular data, like the sales performance across industries of a specific product you plan to sell.
The Industry by Products table shows which industries are commonly associated with each product. This includes state-level data only available for select sectors (44-45, 61, 62, 71, 72, 81). National data is available for all sectors (except 11). The details are at the 2-6 and select 7-8 digit NAICS code levels. For each level, the table presents:
An industry can have a variety of products and services that contribute to overall revenue.
For example, Full-Service Restaurants receive revenue from meals and beverages for immediate consumption as well as retailing food for future consumption.
An individual restaurant establishment might also generate revenue from services provided, such as rental space for parties. These and other data points can be found in the 2022 Economic Census Product Statistics.
Economic census data can give you the lay of the land on any business sector.
Another data table, Selected Sectors: Products by Industry for the U.S.: 2022, dives into rich NAICS product detail by the NAPCS-based (10-digit) product codes. It provides stats on:
The data can also reveal which sectors and products are the top revenue producers. Across 18 sectors of the economy, Patient Care based on primary diagnosis led the way with $2.1 trillion in total revenue. Other NAPCS-based products with high revenue include:
All comparative statements have undergone statistical testing and are statistically significant at the 90% confidence level.
The 2022 Economic Census will conclude with a few remaining Miscellaneous Statistics releases in 2026. For a list of all previously released 2022 Economic Census tables, visit the 2022 Economic Census webpage.
