2013-2017 ACS 5-year PUMS Files and Documentation

2013-2017 ACS 5-year PUMS files are now available on the FTP site.  They are scheduled to be released in American FactFinder on February 14th and DataFerrett on February 28th.

All PUMS documentation has been posted to help users with the release of the 2013-2017 ACS 5-year PUMS files.

2013-2017 ACS Variance Replicate Estimates Tables

2013-2017 ACS Variance Replicate Estimates Tables are now available through the Variance Replicate Estimates Tables data page and the FTP site. These tables allow advanced data users to calculate margins of error when collapsing data within a table or across geographies.  Supporting documentation is also available.

Updated Release Schedule

Due to the government shutdown, the release schedule for the 2013-2017 ACS 5-year PUMS files and 2013-2017 ACS Variance Replicate Estimates Tables was adjusted from the original release date of January 17th. The new dates are:

Thursday, February 7th: The 2013-2017 ACS 5-year PUMS files and 2013-2017 ACS Variance Replicate Estimates Tables will be released on the FTP site, and all documentation will be released on the ACS website.

Thursday, February 14th: Links for both releases will be released via American FactFinder.

Thursday, February 28th: The 2013-2017 ACS 5-year PUMS will be released via DataFerrett.

2013-2017 ACS 5-year Estimates Released December 6

2013-2017 ACS 5-year estimates are available in American FactFinder and the API.

2013-2017 ACS 5-year estimates are based on data collected from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017.

2013-2017 ACS 5-year estimates are available for geographic areas down to the census tract and block group levels.

2013-2017 ACS 5-year Narrative Profiles Available

2013-2017 ACS 5-year Narrative Profiles are available for state, county, place, metropolitan/micropolitan statistical area, ZIP Code Tabulation Area, American Indian Area/Alaska Native Area/Hawaiian Home Land and census tract. Narrative Profiles summarize many topics using nontechnical text and graphs. Visit both the ACS Narrative Profiles page and American FactFinder for continuous profile data since 2009.

Updated 5-year to 5-year Comparison Guidance

Visit our Comparing 2008-2012 ACS 5-year and 2013-2017 ACS 5-year page for guidance on comparing these datasets by subject area.

Summary File Data

The 2013-2017 ACS 5-year Summary File data on the FTP site are now available. Supporting materials were released last week.

5-year Webinar Available

The slides, transcript, and recording from the 2013-2017 ACS 5-year Pre-Release webinar are now available. This webinar covers background information about the ACS, changes for this release, and where to find new data release information on the ACS website. In addition, we demonstrate how to access block group level data in American FactFinder.

Changes to Tables for the 2013-2017 ACS 5-year Release

Select Summary File Materials Released

Supporting materials for the 2013-2017 ACS 5-year Summary File have been released, including the technical document appendices, table shells, and sequence number/table number lookup file. The 5-year Summary File on the FTP site will be released on December 6, 2018.

Release Schedule

The 2013-2017 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates will be released on Thursday, December 6, 2018. These data will be available for all geographic areas including census tracts, ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs), and block groups. The 2013-2017 ACS 5-year PUMS files and 2013-2017 ACS 5-year Variance Replicate Estimates will be released on Thursday, January 17, 2019. 2017 ACS 1-year Supplemental Estimates Released October 18

2017 ACS 1-year Supplemental Estimates are available in American FactFinder and the API.

2017 ACS 1-year Supplemental Estimates are based on data collected from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017.

2017 ACS 1-year Supplemental Estimates are available for geographic areas with populations of 20,000 or more.

2017 ACS 1-year PUMS Files and Additional Documentation Released October 18

2017 ACS 1-year PUMS files are now available in American FactFinder, the FTP site, and DataFerrett.

Additional PUMS documentation, including the PUMS ReadMe, Accuracy of the PUMS, and PUMS Estimates for User Verification, has been released to help users with the release of the 2017 ACS 1-year PUMS files.

2017 ACS 1-year Supplemental Estimates Documentation

Guidance for Data Users: Learn more about when to use 1-year, 1-year supplemental, and 5-year estimates.

Geography and ACS: View the geographic areas with published data for the 1-year Supplemental Estimates.

Modified Tables: View 2017 table changes for a description of this year's modified table.

Table Shells: View the layout of tables (without the estimates or margins of error filled in) by exploring the 1-year Supplemental Estimates table shells.

Select Documentation Released for PUMS Files

Supporting documentation has been released to help users prepare for the release of the 2017 ACS 1-year PUMS files.  New this year: the PUMS Data Dictionary will be available in a new file format (.csv) in response to data user requests for a machine-readable format.

Additional documentation will be released on October 18, 2018.

2017 ACS 1-year Estimates Released September 13

2017 ACS 1-year estimates are based on data collected from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017. The 2017 Puerto Rico Community Survey (PRCS) 1-year estimates are based on about eight and a half months of data collected from January 2017 through mid-September 2017 due to the impact of hurricanes.

2017 ACS 1-year estimates are available in American FactFinder and the API.

2017 ACS 1-year estimates are available for geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more.

Comparison Guidance

Guidance on comparing the 2017 ACS 1-year estimates with 2016 ACS 1-year estimates, 2010 Census, and Census 2000 by subject area is now available.

Summary File Data

The 1-year Summary File data on the FTP site are now available. Supporting materials were released last week.

Two new interactive visualizations are available: 2017 ACS Data Wheel and What Can You Learn from the American Community Survey? These visualizations allow you to explore some of the most popular ACS statistics for states, congressional districts, and metropolitan statistical areas.

Release Schedule

The 2017 ACS 1-year estimates will be released on Thursday, September 13, 2018.  These data will be available for the nation, all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, every congressional district, every metropolitan area, and all counties and places with populations of 65,000 or more. The 2017 ACS 1-year Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) files and 2017 ACS 1-year Supplemental Estimates will be released on Thursday, October 18, 2018.
