Exploring the Racial and Ethnic Diversity of Various Age Groups

Written by: Megan Rabe, Senior Analyst for Special Population Statistics; Eric Jensen, Senior Advisor for Population Estimates and Coverage Measurement — September 6 — The 2020 Census showed that the population under age 18 was more racially and ethnically diverse than the population 18 and over. But how racially and ethnically diverse were other age groups? The Exploring Age Groups in the 2020 Census interactive data visualization and supplemental tables allow us to answer that question by examining racial and ethnic diversity metrics for several age groups:

  •  Under 5 years.
  •  5 to 17 years.
  •  18 to 24 years.
  •  25 to 34 years.
  •  35 to 44 years.
  •  45 to 64 years.
  •  65 to 84 years.
  •  85 to 99 years.
  •  100 years and older.
Difference Between the Supplemental and Official Poverty Measures

Written by: John Creamer and Kalee Burns, Social, Economic and Housing Statistics Division — September 6 — There has been continued debate about the best way to measure poverty in the United States since the first official U.S. poverty statistics were published in the mid-1960s. The U.S. Census Bureau releases two poverty measures in September. The first, called the official poverty measure, is based on cash resources. The second measure, the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), includes both cash and noncash benefits and subtracts necessary expenses (such as taxes and medical expenses). The official poverty measure has remained mostly unchanged since it was introduced in the mid-1960s. In contrast, the SPM was designed to improve as new data methods and research become available. This blog discusses the development of the SPM and differences between the two measures.

How Inflation Affects the Census Bureau’s Income and Earnings Estimate

Written by: Matthew Unrath, Social, Economic and Housing Statistics Division — September 6 — On Sept. 12, 2023, the U.S. Census Bureau will release a new report comparing estimates of median income and earnings between 2021 and 2022 and historical income and earnings dating back to 1967. Transforming the Census Bureau’s Annual Surveys of Businesses

Written by: Ron Jarmin, Deputy Director — September 5 — The U.S. Census Bureau conducts several annual economic surveys of businesses that are critical to the nation’s data infrastructure. These surveys provide a bridge between the comprehensive coverage provided by our 5-year economic census and the timeliness of our monthly indicator surveys. They provide benchmarks for the monthly surveys and help us maintain our Business Register – our frame of U.S. companies and their locations and basic characteristics – that supports all our statistical programs focused on businesses. The annual surveys are a valuable resource used in economic research (including several of my own papers) helping us to understand things like business dynamism and productivity growth.
